Home / School News (Page 2)

Dear Parents and Guardians of our Colwood Elementary Students,

I hope you are having a wonderful week! In an effort to minimize the amount of emails you receive from the school, I will try and send home our Cougar’s Den Update each Wednesday, rather than at the start of the week. I hope you find it useful and that it helps make you feel connected to the school, especially in a year when we are not allowed to have parents in.

First, on behalf of our staff and students we’d like to thank Lowe’s for donating 40 buckets and lids to our music department.  Thanks to one of parents, Lisa McGregor, for arranging delivery.

Earlier in the year I shared with you a Visual Guide “Resources for Parents”. I have included it again in this newsletter as it has some information on the different organizations and programs that support youth in the Westshore. The winter months can be hard on families and on children – especially in the midst of a pandemic — so anything you can do to help yourself or your children stay fit, healthy and well-adjusted is important. Hopefully you find this guide helpful.

We are doing well as a school and a district to keep our schools safe and healthy. Thank you for following our Covid-19 protocols, as they are working for us here at the school, especially:

  • Keeping your kids home when they are ill
  • Coming as close as possible to pick-off and drop-off times and avoiding the playground immediately afterschool to keep our cohorts from mixing
  • Calling the office rather than coming into the building directly.

Thank you for continuing to be so kind, supportive and conscientious about our collective health and safety.

Lastly, we are in the process of thinking about redesigning our school logo, for a few different reasons, and this conversation even started last year. If we go ahead with this plan, we would make a change for September 2021. We really want parent and student input, so if you have 3-5 minutes please take a few minutes to respond to this survey: https://forms.gle/RFNQsqocSWsgkXaT6

Please keep your comments related to the survey topic (redesigning Colwood’s logo) and if you have other, unrelated comments, please send them my way via email.

Best wishes and take care,

Jen Nixon

Dear Colwood Elementary Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back and Happy New Year!  I am looking forward to the year ahead and all the promise it brings! I hope you were able to enjoy a break with your child/children over the past few weeks and that all found time to do something that you love. I am really looking forward to seeing our Colwood students tomorrow morning and getting back to a more consistent routine.

I will send out a more detailed message home in the next couple of days, but I wanted to just touch base before tomorrow to bring your attention to a few reminders as we settle back into a regular school routine:

  1. If your child is sick please keep them at home until they are feeling better.
  2. Your child must complete a daily health check before they come to school.  Symptoms to look for include: fever; chills; cough or worsening chronic cough; shortness of breath; loss of sense of smell or taste; diarrhea or nausea/vomiting.  You can find more information about health checks and provincial resources on the SD 62 website https://www.sd62.bc.ca/covid-19/resources-parents/daily-health-check along with the BCCDC website: http://www.bccdc.ca/health-info/diseases-conditions/covid-19/about-covid-19
  3. Please call the office rather than enter the school if you require assistance from someone in the school. We have very specific visitor protocol this year so please do not come into the school without prior approval and after reviewing the visitor check-in information.
  4. If your child has travelled internationally over the break they must quarantine for 14 days before returning to school.  This is a federal government requirement: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/transportation/driving-and-cycling/traveller-information/travel-affected-by-covid-19?keyword=covid&keyword=travel&keyword=quarantine#interprovincial

On another note, please ensure you save your refundable containers as our PAC is holding a bottle drive on January 16. More information to follow this week!

As we navigate these new waters we will continue to take Dr. Henry’s words to heart to “Be Kind, Be Calm, Be Safe”.  Wishing all of you a wonderful 2021 and I look forward to seeing you over the coming weeks.

Take care,

Jen Nixon
Principal

ONLINE CONSENT PORTALhttps://consent.sd62.bc.ca

Phase 1, The parent page – This is where parents log in to provide and/or review consents for their children.
• When using the system for the first time, parents must use the front page to request an access number (which acts as their password).
• Parents use the verification number to gain entry. From there, they can provide consent to the 8 activities. If your student is not listed, please make sure that the email address used is the same email address your students school has on file.

1. Health Check responsibility
2. GAFE (Student Access to Google Apps for Education)
3. Media Release
4. KEV School Cash Online-great tool to be used to collect funds for school payments. To be rolled out throughout the year. Currently used  in Middle and High schools.

When do the Consents expire?
• Some consents (namely GAFE, KEV, and FreshGrade) expire once a student leaves the district and/or graduates.
• Some consents last one school year
• The system tracks the expiry of these consents. To renew a consent year to year (for Internet access, as an example) a parent simply reconnects to the system next school year.  The system will note that the consent has expired and will give parents an opportunity to renew their permission.

How do you sign up for these consents?
Step 1 – go to: https://consent.sd62.bc.ca
Step 2 – Add your email address
Step 3 –  A verification number will be sent your email address within a couple minutes. Make note of your SD62 email verification number

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 250-478-2332, nkowalko@sd62.bc.ca or in person in the front office. I’m happy to assist you when I can.
